Production and distribution of methamphetamine have increased significantly, leading to greater availability and lower prices. This is partly due to establishment of large-scale production operations in Mexico, a major supplier to “meth” users nationwide. In 2024, approximately 2.5 million people in the United States reported using methamphetamine in the past 12 months. A few recent reviews of medications tested for MUD between 2000 and 2020 have provided exhaustive information on different classes of medications that have been examined and the results of their clinical trials . Pharmacotherapies evaluated for MUD aimed to decrease the reinforcing/rewarding effects of METH, decrease cravings and negative effects of withdrawal from METH, or ameliorate comorbid psychiatric conditions and METH abuse-related cognitive impairments. No medication provided sufficient evidence to promote its use in the routine clinical management of MUD.

When smoked, methamphetamineexhibits 90.3% bioavailability, compared to 67.2% for oral ingestion(Caldwell et al., 1972). Populations under-represented in the literature must also be addressed in future research. Harmonisation of outcomes and outcome measures to meth abuse produce results that can be synthesised by meta-analyses should be a sector-wide imperative, to ensure better research synthesis.
